Osimhen: Filling Yekini’s Super Eagles Shoes Will Be Heavy But Achievable

The 21-year-old center forward has spoken of his desire to become the future top scorer in the country’s history

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has revealed his goal to match and surpass Rashidi Yekini’s scoring feat for Nigeria.

Yekini remains the Super Eagles’ top scorer with 37 goals in 58 games and helped the team perform well in international competitions with his impressive performances during his years as a player.

Osimhen has scored four goals in nine appearances for the three-time African champions since making his debut against Togo in 2017.

The 21-year-old revealed that he would continue to work toward becoming the Super Eagles’ all-time top scorer, though he admitted it wouldn’t be a walk in the park.

“I have always said to put myself in the place of a legend, the late Rashidi Yekini is a bit heavy for me, but I think I am on the right track in this direction,” Osimhen told the media.

“If I am injury free I can do it, but it will never be easy and, of course, with the confidence that the coach has in me and the fans also support me, I think it can be done.

“For now I want to continue helping the team, continue to do well with my club and I really want to achieve this feat, but it will never be easy.

“Compared to what he has done for the national team and made a name for himself around the world, it is a big step for me. By the special grace of God, I am going to achieve this feat and also pass it.

Osimhen partnered with Serie A Napoli in the summer from French club Lille for a club record fee of € 80 million.

The forward has only managed two goals in eight appearances in all competitions since his arrival, but revealed that he is not under pressure to deliver.

“There is no pressure for me, it is to keep improving with the team, I think I joined the team about four months ago,” he continued.

“I’ve been doing quite well, not too bad and I think I can really improve as well, I’m really working hard in that direction.”

Osimhen is expected to play a key role for Nigeria when they face Sierra Leone in a qualifying match for the African Cup of Nations on Friday.

The Super Eagles lead Group L with six points from two games after victories over the Republic of Benin and Lesotho.
