Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: We need Martial to not rest on laurels

Anthony Martial 'begged' to come in before scoring Manchester United's goal against LASK Linz.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits he wants more from Anthony Martial.

Martial was United’s top scorer with 23 goals last season, but has only scored twice so far, both in the Champions League against RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Solskjaer believes that Martial’s dismissal against Tottenham last month and a possible lack of confidence may be to blame for his problems.

“Anthony showed he made great strides last season, now is the time to make even bigger strides and develop more,” said Solskjaer.

“He scored 23 goals last season, which was a great comeback. He took great strides to become the forward he can be. Every season is a challenge and you can’t rest on your laurels at Man United. There are demands on every position.

“We want Anthony to continue. With France against Portugal he showed his center-forward qualities by getting into positions, but Rui Patricio made some good saves and that may have affected Anthony’s confidence.

“His conversion rate has always been good, but right now the goalkeepers have made good saves against him.”

“Anthony is no different from other players, he has not had a preseason as usual and he is preparing for his best form.

“He had a three-game suspension, so he lost too much football. But he scored against Basaksehir last time, good header, and I hope he returns to his best level.
