Nigerian Striker Celebrates First Goal For German Club

Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi has finally opened his scoring account with his new German club Union Berlin

Awoniyi scored his first goal for Union Berlin in a 2-1 win over Cologne in a Bundesliga game on Sunday.

The Nigerian forward’s goal comes after five games in the German top flight this season.

Awoniyi is on loan for another season in Berlin by Premier League champion Liverpool.

The long-awaited moment for the Liverpool loan came three minutes before half an hour when Awoniyi endured challenges from the Cologne defenders to break the stalemate after shooting from close range.

The strike was his second goal in the Bundesliga, having previously scored a goal against the same opponent during his time on loan at Mainz 05 last season.

Having finally come off the mark with his first goal, Awoniyi will look forward to more, even as Union Berlin’s unbeaten streak has been extended to eight games.

They have won three league games in a row.

Union Berlin ranks fifth in the Bundesliga table with 15 points from eight games.
