Mabel Okoye scored her first goal in Spain’s Reto Iberdrola’s 2020-21 season when Madrid II beat Pozuelo Alarcón 2-0 at Matapinonera on Saturday.
Heading into the tie, Madrid had failed to win in their first two games after a loss to Racing Santander before drawing 1-1 with city rivals Atlético de Madrid II in the last match.
The Nigerian-born Spanish youth international, who scored four goals during the preseason, paved the way to inspire her team’s first win of the season against visitors.
In search of the first victory, Madrid created numerous chances, but could not convert, as they were forced to draw at half-time.
After the restart, Okoye broke the deadlock with his first league goal of the season for his team in the 63rd minute of the match.
With 10 minutes remaining, Julia Hernández took the minutes with a second of the contest to guarantee her first victory of the season.
Despite being born in Madrid, Okoye is eligible to play for Nigeria at the under-20 and senior level, through his father, who is Nigerian.
The 19-year-old, who came to Madrid from Tacón in 2018, shone for Spain when she won the 2018 U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay and the 2018 Uefa U-17 Women’s Championship in Lithuania.
The victory took Madrid II to fifth position in the Spanish Reto Iberdrola table with four points after three games and they will travel to face Friol in their next tie on 29 November.
