Former player David Beckham could have been the UK’s sports minister, but the then prime minister’s head of public relations avoided it.

Beckham’s career as a player has given much, in addition to his role as a media entrepreneur. The former player could even have been the UK sports minister.

According to Sir Craig Oliver, former head of public relations for David Cameron on the ‘What Were You Thinking?’ Podcast, the intention emerged in 2013.

“I said, ‘Wait a minute, I’ve run into Beckham a couple of times. Very nice guy, but I’m not sure if he’s cut out to be in the mailbox of the House of Lords defending the government’s sports policy, ‘which can be tricky, ”he said.

Sir Craig Oliver was sure they would be very sorry if they went ahead with the idea.

“Everyone would make fun of us, and even if we had glorious coverage, we would end up regretting it as we please for many, many months to come,” he concluded.
