Carlo Ancelotti: Alex Iwobi needs confidence to play in wingback position for Everton

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti believes Alex Iwobi needs more confidence to play at the Everton full-back position.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti believes Alex Iwobi needs more confidence to play at the Everton side position.

The 24-year-old had an impressive performance for the Toffees at the right-back position against Fulham last weekend.

Ancelotti has praised the impact of the Nigeria international in the game and believes he may be an option for the injured Lucas Digne when he faces Leeds United on Saturday night.

“I was happy for his performance [against Fulham]. He did good. He can fill that position as a winger, ”Ancelotti told the club’s website.

“Iwobi is a good player but he needs to feel that confidence, like everyone else! For Alex, it is important to feel that there are people who trust him.

“During a season, it can happen that you lose some important players and we have to manage this situation.

“I think we can adapt to the loss of Lucas Digne. We have a good squad, good substitutes in that position [full-back].

“Nkounkou has no experience in the Premier League, but he showed good quality in the game he played. He is young but has a lot of quality

“We have Jonjoe Kenny on the right, we have the possibility to substitute and we will try. Three centrals can be an option. Alex Iwobi can play on the left as a winger without problems ”.

Iwobi has also previously stated that he is willing to play in any position for the Goodison Park team, but admitted that he still needs a lot to learn to play in the full-back role.

“I played right back a couple of times for Arsenal, they wanted me to shoot and, like I did in the first half in Fulham, make crosses and run down the line with the ball,” Iwobi said.

“It’s not something I’ve done a lot at, but wherever they tell me to play, I try to do my best. Ben [Godfrey] and James [Rodriguez] and Doucs [Doucoure] They were talking to me and they made it more comfortable.

“Sometimes, with my defensive position, I wouldn’t know where to be, but with them helping and talking it was much easier.

“I will take the positive but there are still things I have to learn if I am going to play in this position, especially on defense.

“At least for me, playing as a right-back, the coach has in mind, I can play anywhere on the left, right and in the middle.

“Wherever he wants me to play, I can do that job. And wherever I am playing, I will give 100% for the club.

Iwobi has made 10 appearances for Everton this season in all competitions and is looking forward to helping them secure their second straight win against Leeds United.
