The rescheduled second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup, the first round tie between Rivers United and Bloemfontein Celtic will now be held at Stade Charles De Gaulles De Porto Novo, Republic of Benin, on January 23.
Rivers United confirmed the new date and location on their official Twitter account.
“Rescheduled match # 79 Rivers United (Nigeria) Vs @Bloem_Celtic (South Africa), Total #cafcc 2020/21 will take place at Stade Charles De Gaulles De Porto Novo, Republic of Benin on January 23, 2021 to 16:00 hrs. ” club tweeted.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) ordered the game to be moved to a neighboring country to Nigeria, which has more lenient Covid-19 protocols for travelers arriving from South Africa.
Originally, the match should have been played on January 6 in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt, but the South African team was unable to travel to Nigeria due to strict coronavirus regulations set by the Nigerian government.
The regulations meant that Bloemfontein Celtic would have had to be quarantined for seven days upon arrival, because South Africa is designated as a high-risk country.
Rivers United defeated the South Africans 2-0 in the first leg.
The outright winner will face Enyimba in the play-off round for a place in the group stage of the competition.
