The president of the African Football Confederation (Caf) has appealed his five-year ban on football-related activities in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

The FIFA adjudication chamber of the Independent Ethics Committee found him guilty of abuse of office, embezzlement, and of offering gifts and other benefits as president of Caf and vice president of FIFA.

In addition to the penalty, the Malagasy, who revealed his intention to run for a second term in office, also received a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs.

According to a statement issued by the Caf president’s team, the sentence was passed to prevent Ahmad from being re-elected to the Caf presidency.

“On Tuesday, November 24, 2020, Mr. Ahmad Ahmad, President of Caf and Vice President of FIFA, announced that his lawyers will file an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to firmly challenge the ruling handed down by failure. chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee, ”the statement read.

“On Monday, November 23, 2020, the Adjudication Chambers of the Ethics Committee issued a five-year sanction for the exercise of any activity related to football, nationally and internationally, as well as a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs of the Ethics Committee, against the president of Caf and the vice president of FIFA, Ahmad Ahmad.

“This decision was not made in a fair and impartial manner. During the months of the investigation carried out by the Instruction Room of the FIFA Ethics Committee, headed by Ms. María Claudia Rojas, against the African Football Confederation and its president, many surprising procedures have been observed.

Thus, FIFA gave a mandate to the auditing firm PwC to investigate the administration of African football, despite the fact that this firm had been working for Caf and under a mandate from the latter, thus creating a conflict of interest and an obvious problem. lack of impartiality. “

“Furthermore, rumors about FIFA’s possible involvement in the work of the Ethics Committee have constantly resounded in the European and African press. The leaks of information regarding the ongoing procedure – which is supposed to be strictly confidential – and systematically unfavorable to President Ahmad, have been made public through the press, effectively preventing a calm investigation from being carried out ”, he continued.

“Even the hearing of President Ahmad, who was notably denied the right to question some of his witnesses during a hearing conducted at the double pace of the prosecution, was not held according to customary and expected standards.

“As a result of these irregularities, the facts presented in a highly questionable manner by the Chambers of Investigation to the Adjudicatory Chambers of the FIFA Ethics Committee. In addition, the latter hastened to issue an urgent decision for immediate execution, without substantiating the sentence, despite its seriousness. The reason for such haste could be that this ruling would prevent President Ahmad from being re-elected to the Caf presidency in the elections scheduled for March 2021, despite the numerous supporters already declared in his favor.

“Therefore, an appeal will be filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge this incomprehensible and shocking decision. In addition, he will request the suspension of the decision, so as not to aggravate the prejudice he is suffering and allow him to campaign for his re-election to the precedence of Caf ”.
