There will be an increase in COVID-19 cases during the Christmas celebration, warns the WHO.

Nigeria online news reports that the World Health Organization has forecast an increase in COVID-19 cases ahead of the Christmas celebrations and New Year’s festivities, which will witness an increase in social gatherings.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, revealed this during a webinar attended by select African journalists on Thursday.

Moeti urged countries to be on high alert for a potential increase in COVID-19 cases, even as nearly 20 countries in the region saw an increase in cases.

She said: “As we approach the time of year when people move to vacation together, there is an increased risk of COVID-19 transmission.

“New clusters of cases may emerge in places that have not been affected so far as people travel or gather for the holidays. But we can reduce risks by wearing masks, limiting the number of people who hang out, observing physical distancing, and practicing good hand hygiene. We can celebrate, but do it safely, ”Moeti said.
