Rescue teams are trying to reach at least 30 miners in Zimbabwe trapped underground after a shaft collapsed in an outdated gold mine.

Relatives of those trapped have been on vigil since Wednesday night, when the accident occurred in the city of Bindura, north of the capital, Harare.

French news agency Agence France-Presse reports that the head of the Zimbabwe miners’ federation, Wellington Takavarasha, said on Thursday that six people had been rescued.

Miners involved in small-scale operations are said to work in unauthorized environments to avoid selling their gold to a state buyer and receiving a reduced amount of foreign currency.

Gold mining represents 60% of the foreign exchange that enters Zimbabwe.
