Ramaphosa bans alcohol sales in South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a ban on the sale of alcohol on Monday, saying that wearing masks would be mandatory in public as his country became the first on the continent to record one million cases of coronavirus.

Ramaphosa said during a televised speech that alcohol would be temporarily banned from midnight to help emergency services already under pressure.

He also announced that it would be “mandatory for everyone to wear a mask in public spaces”, and said it was a “drastic measure, now necessary.”
