Police, others rescue one as gunmen kidnap two in Ekiti

The Nigerian Police say their investigation shows that Boko Haram, Ansaru and other terrorist groups are receiving support from some Nigerians.

It was a lucky day for one of the kidnapped victims who was rescued by joint forces of the Police, Amotekun’s body and hunters on Christmas Day.

The rescued victim was abducted along with another person by unknown gunmen in Ekiti state.

The incident occurred along the Isan-Iludun highway around 6 pm, when bystanders were detained by armed bandits and kidnapped.

Security teams are still making efforts to rescue the second victim.

The former Ekiti State Agriculture Commissioner, Mr. Folorunso Olabode, was kidnapped on that route, while one of his political associates was shot and killed by the gunmen.

A source from Iludun Ekiti confirmed to reporters in Ado Ekiti on Saturday that a vehicle following the victims quickly alerted the police and Amotekun’s body for swift action.

“It was a vehicle that was coming after the Jeep that was transporting the victims that stopped its car and fled to the mountain to contact some people.

“The people contacted immediately called the police in Oye Ekiti and Amotekun’s body, who were joined by local hunters, gave the gunmen a chase in the bush and rescued one of the victims.”

Also recounting how the incident happened, Ekiti Commando police public relations officer Mr. Sunday Abutu confirmed that his men at the Oye divisional police station worked with other local security teams to rescue one of the victims. .

Abutu in a statement said: “On December 25, 2020 around 6 pm, Oye DPO received a distress call in which some unknown gunmen forcibly stopped a Jeep Lexus along the Isan / Iludun Ekiti highway. and they kidnapped the two occupants.

“Upon receiving the information, the DPO took his team to the scene with the help of the Amotekun Corps, the vigilantes and the hunters, one of the victims was rescued while serious efforts are being made to ensure the rescue of the other victim.”

Abutu said the success of the operation indicates the readiness of the police to work with the inhabitants of Ekiti to rid the state of criminal elements.

Abutu added that the Police Commissioner, Mr. Babatunde Mobayo, called for calm and implored anyone with useful information about the incident or other criminal activities to please contact the nearest Police Station for immediate action.
