A 60-year-old couple, Ashifat Okunade, and his wife, Mariam, were prosecuted before an Osogbo Magistrates Court for allegedly cutting off the head and hands of a corpse.
The couple were previously prosecuted in court at times in March 2020, but were re-prosecuted for a substitute charge that was recently read to them.
The police prosecutor, John Idoko, alleged in the charge sheet that the couple conspired with others in general to commit a misdemeanor, manipulating the body of one Rasheed Tiamiyu by cutting off the head and hands of the remaining body.
He added that the crime that contravened article 242 of the 5th Penal Code Cap. 34 Vol. II Laws of the Osun State of Nigeria of 2002, was committed on March 21, 2020 in the Dagbolu area of Ifon, Osun State.
However, the couple pleaded not guilty to the two counts of conspiracy and indecent interference with the dead they were charged with. Defense lawyer Yemisi Akintajuwa pleaded with the court to admit the defendants on bail.
The presiding magistrate, Dr. Olusegun Ayilara, ruled that the defendant must continue to enjoy the terms of the bond granted in the previous position and postponed the case until January 8, 2021 for a hearing.
