Police arrest wanted pirate after attack on passenger boat in Rivers

The Nigerian Police say their investigation shows that Boko Haram, Ansaru and other terrorist groups are receiving support from some Nigerians.

The Rivers Police Command arrested a Daniel George, suspected of being a pirate, for his alleged involvement in the attack on a passenger ship on the Bonny waterways.

Journalists report that the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, and many of the passengers on board the ship were injured.

A Bonny-resident fisherman, who gave his name simply as Tamuno, said some of the passengers jumped into the river to avoid having their belongings stolen during the attack.

However, the command’s public relations officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the arrest on Friday in Port Harcourt, said the attack resulted in the death of a passenger.

“George, an indigenous person from the Asarama community in the Andoni local government area, who has been on our wanted list, has been arrested.

“The suspect is helping us to obtain information so that the police can go after the other gang members,” he said.

The police spokesman said a statewide manhunt had been declared to detain the fleeing gang members and bring them to justice.

“The suspects are members of a pirate gang that has been terrorizing the Bonny River,” added Omoni.
