Onitsha to become port of final destination soon – NIWA chief

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) on Wednesday denied allegations that it topped up its 2020 budget with fraudulent and nonexistent projects worth N4 billion.

The managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Chief George Moghalu, has said that efforts have been stepped up to ensure that the river port of Onitsha in Anambra state becomes the port of final destination in a short time. .

Addressing the former presidents general of the 181 communities in Anambra state during their meeting in Awka, Moghalu said that once the port became operational, all that is required for entrepreneurs in this part of the country is that the Importers pay for their goods abroad and dispatch them in Onitsha when they arrive in Nigeria.

Moghalu, who spoke through a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly and a head of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said Chief Theo Nnorom as managing director of NIWA, his wish was to see that the port Onitsha riverfront became fully functional, so goods were dispatched there to reduce the stress of going to the ports of Lagos and Apapa to dispatch goods destined for Onitsha.

He said that in the meantime, NIWA had put machinery in place to ensure that light ships carried containers to Onitsha where they would be dispatched.

Nnorom said: “Moghalu wants to run for governor of Anambra state in 2021. As a former PG, you are very important stakeholders in the state and for anyone to be successful in the next governor race; should consult and work with you.

“Any politician who ignores your importance in society is already doomed to failure. If you look, there is a high level of infrastructure deterioration in the state and that is what Moghalu will correct if he is elected governor in 2021.

“We need someone who knows every nook and cranny of the state and understands the needs of the people.

“Moghalu has been tested and was not found to be deficient in all the positions he held in the past. He was commissioned in Abia during the administration of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and later CEO in a critical sector.

“He served as APC’s national auditor before the president deemed him worthy of becoming managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). He pleads for support to become governor to work for the people of Anambra state because he knows the terrain well.

“If we elect someone who is on the ground, they will meet the needs of all communities in the state. He was born here, grew up here and went to school here. Therefore, I urge you to partner with him in the race for Government House in Anambra. “

Chief Omeife I Omeife, Acting National President of the Association of Former General Presidents of Municipal Unions of Nigeria, said the association had decided to endorse Moghalu as APC’s candidate for the 2021 elections following the assistance it had provided to its members.

“We decided to back him because he promised to offer employment to 20 of our members in federal government offices. He is a good man and we assure him that we will work with him.

“We promise to mobilize our people for him for the gubernatorial election. That is why I approve him as an APC candidate for 2021. We are not a political group, but we know a good candidate when we see him, ”he said.
