Nigerian Media To Start Projecting Election Results Soon – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has stated that it will continue to strive to improve the transparency of the country’s electoral process.

INEC Akwa Ibom Resident Election Commissioner Mike Igini, who appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Wednesday, November 25, said Nigerian media will soon begin projecting election results just like their counterparts in the United States. after the commission’s results portal was launched.

Igini said the deployment of the public viewing portal eradicated voter fraud in the Edo and Ondo gubernatorial elections, as Nigerians saw the result almost after the ballot was cast.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner also described the political elite as the greatest threat to the country, arguing that it is they who attack both INEC hardware and software in order not to generate credible elections in the country.

He said;

“I can confirm that INEC has made tremendous progress. The INEC of today is no longer the INEC of before because since 2011, the type of elections that we have carried out have notably departed from where we used to be even though we are not where we are supposed to be.

“The INEC public viewing portal is a new innovation to address the recurring problems of vote changes at the level of collation and that is why it was introduced to ensure that in the voting unit, once the result is published, it is sent to the portals observation so Nigerians can see it.

“On the way we’re going, I’m pretty sure that not too far from now, Channels Television, all the other stations, will be able to do what CNN and other television stations in the United States do when they do projections.

“In the elections to the Edo and Ondo states, even before the INEC made the declarations, there was no tension in the country because people already had access, they saw the results, that’s where we are going.

“But the problem we have is that the political elite of our country is the biggest threat to our country. They are in disorder; they are the ones who attack both the hardware and the software of the INEC so as not to generate credible elections in our country ”.
