HURIWA Faults Umahi Over Attacks On PDP Leaders

Notorious human rights group, the Nigerian Human Rights Writers Association, HURIWA, on Saturday rebuked Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi for allegedly trying to mislead the public into believing that tension is brewing in the state after his defection to the Congress of All Progressives. , APC, was the work of the heads of the Popular Democratic Party, PDP.

The governor had in a broadcast to the people on Friday after a meeting with security agencies in Abakiliki, the capital of Ebonyi state, he assured PPD members of peaceful coexistence as long as they, in turn, live in peace with others.

“I have reported allegations that some Ebonyi engaged with cultists and members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, to initiate assassinations and instigate a crisis in the state. This is in the name of fighting the governor and the state government, ”Umahi said, even as he accused former and serving government officials of being behind the recent tension.

“I decided to share this information with the security agencies because every governor of the state has been fought by these same people. One stitch in time saves nine; We are bringing this information to the public so that if it is true and it starts to happen, it is known that I shared it with law enforcement agencies and the public.

“I also commissioned law enforcement agencies to implement policies on tinted windows in vehicles, the use of sirens and police escorts. Many people who use escorts are not entitled to them and these groups of people show power when they arrive in communities with their security escorts firing into the air.

“We do not want this to continue and security agencies should strip them of those security details that are used to harass innocent citizens,” he added.

However, in reaction to the state broadcast, HURIWA warned law enforcement agencies to resist the temptation to allow anyone to use them for a “political witch hunt” of perceived enemies, regardless of their status in Ebonyi state.

In a statement made available to journalists, HURIWA Executive Director Emmanuel Onwubiko urged well-meaning Nigerians to prevail over Governor Umahi to focus on the issue of governance, rather than launching security agencies. against the public given the lessons learned in the recent EndSARS protests that swept across the country.

“The police and the army are still fighting to clean up the bad image. Let the Governor of Ebonyi State not be allowed to drag the heads of the nation’s armed forces into partisan politics and thereby ruin their professional and institutional place of honor.

“Umahi cannot be judge and prosecutor in her own case. He cannot be allowed to use what he even admitted to be fake news to accuse innocent Nigerians of sponsoring armed cultists to destabilize the peace in Ebonyi state. Is he the Chief of the Defense Staff or is he the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces who now determines who gets police security or not? the statement read in part.

The group advised the relevant authorities to take note of the accusations made by the governor, and stressed that once his immunity expires, he should be invited to clarify things about those who allegedly sponsor cultists in the state.

“HURIWA is calling on the Nigerian Police to keep Mr. Dave Umahi on their watch list so that he can defend why he had to bring such significant charges as the sponsorship of armed cultists against people who refused to defect with him to his recently found political family of the Congress of All Progressives ”, he added.

Onwubiko recalled how the residence of former Senate Vice President Ike Ekweremadu was searched when a false security alert was generated and how the man behind the alert was later prosecuted in court when nothing incriminating was found in the building.
