Ethiopia’s Tigrayan forces destroy Axum airport – media

Tigray forces fighting Ethiopian government troops are standing firm on the southern front and clashing with soldiers around the northern city of Adigrat, Debretsion Gebremichael, head of the Tigray People's Liberation Front, told via text message.

Forces from Ethiopia’s Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) destroyed an airport in the city of Axum, state broadcaster Fana said on Monday, after federal troops gave them three days to surrender.

TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael told Reuters the ultimatum was a cover for government forces to regroup after what he described as defeats on three fronts.

There was no immediate response from either side to the other’s comments and Reuters was unable to confirm the latest statements. The claims of all parties are difficult to verify because telephone and Internet communication has been disrupted.
