The police command in Ekiti confirmed the murder of a police officer on Friday when gunmen allegedly abducted a Chinese expatriate in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti state.

The kidnapped man was one of the engineers who worked with the Chinese company that operated the new Ado-Iyin highway.

The Command Police Public Relations Officer ASP Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the incident to reporters by phone, said the incident occurred around 4:30 pm along the new Ado Ekiti-Iyin Ekiti highway.

He said that the kidnapped Chinese was one of the engineers in charge of the new road network project awarded by the current administration.

Abutu said that in addition to the late police officer, another person was also shot at the scene of the incident.

“It is confirmed that today a kidnapping occurred around 4:30 pm along the new Iyin-Ekiti highway.

“During the incident, a civilian, an expatriate, was kidnapped, shot, while a policeman was shot dead.

“Our operatives are already combing the branches for a possible capture of the perpetrators,” he said. Abutu said that Ekiti Police Commissioner Babatunde Mobayo urged the public to remain calm despite the incident.

“He also ordered them to avoid any form of arrest, since the Command would do everything in its power to guarantee the freedom of the abducted expatriate and bring the guilty to justice,” he said.
