The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), all in Edo State, have called on the federal and state government to address the high level of insecurity plaguing the state.
Dr. Omokhua Harrison made the call at a press conference at Doctors House ‘on Monday in Benin.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to guarantee peace and rescue the people of Edo and save them from the hands of thugs.
“The NMA and the NBA are also asking the Director of State Security and the Governor of Edo State to please save the people of Edo State from even more agony by doing what is necessary.
“We commend their efforts so far to curb the threat, but there is still much to do in this regard, as it appears that these efforts have not yielded the desired results.”
“Suffice it to say here that, in addition to armed robbery, worship and the killing of innocents, kidnapping has also increased.”
“No less than seven people are kidnapped daily on the Benin-Auchi highway,” they said.
“One would have hoped that they have barely recovered from the fear and psychological torture brought about by the pandemic, Covid-19 and while people are counting the losses caused by the pandemic, the people of Edo should at least sleep in peace.”
“What we are witnessing now in the state is totally incomprehensible. We live in fear caused by the incessant attacks on both lives and property, “he added.
According to him, the clearing of the bushes of about 50 meters of the road on both sides, as was done for the Benin-Ore axis, should be extended to the trouble spots on the Benin-Auchi axis.
Omokhua said the NMA and the NBA Edo State Branch will continue to lead the defense of a better life for the people of Edo.
He said the associations were convinced that Governor Godwin Obaseki would continue to do what was necessary to protect the lives and property of the people of Edo, allowing the state police to help address immediately in the state.
