Akwa Ibom governor commends correctional service over inmates rehabilitation

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel says it is not safe to reopen schools in the state in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel commended the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS, for taking steps to ensure the comprehensive rehabilitation of inmates in various correctional facilities across the country.

Emmanuel who gave the eulogy over the weekend when the Deputy Comptroller General of the NCS, zone ‘E’, Owerri Mr. Victor Chiabua, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Uyo.

His words: “I want to congratulate you and the Command for what you have been doing in Akwa Ibom State. I really appreciate it. When you send men and women to correctional facilities, your goal is always to change them for the better.

“I thank you for working tirelessly to ensure that inmates are reformed. And every time I visit prisons to speak, teach and interact with inmates, I find that a good number of them are changeable and can be converted for the better.

“With the various programs available to inmates, they have a good chance of transforming themselves into useful citizens for themselves and for society.”

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary of State Government (SSG) Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, emphasized that an Internet Cafe is established in the Penitentiary Centers so that the inmates have knowledge about the internet.

He identified unemployment as the reason youth engage in crime and linked the #EndSARS protests hijacked by thugs to causing violence and property destruction to idle youth without proper mentoring.

In his comments, the Assistant Controller, Mr. Victor Chiabua, who said his team was on a familiarization tour of the correctional facilities in the Area, appealed to the state government to help expedite the offender reform process for their adequate reintegration into society.

In particular, he requested the reconstruction of the Correctional Center in the local government of Abak in order to decongest the facility, as well as the provision of vehicles to help in the transportation of inmates during court appearances.
