Maje Ayida Defeats Toke Makinwa In Court, Awarded 1 Million Naira In Damages

A High Court of the State of Lagos in Tafawa Balewa Square presided over by H.E. Judge Ogunjobi, on November 12, 2020, ruled in favor of fitness entrepreneur Maje Ayida in a defamation lawsuit against Toke Makinwa.

In its ruling, the court held that after careful consideration of the evidence before the court, it considers that only the content of page 54, line 11-16 and page 83, line 1 of the first defendant’s book is defamatory.

Thereafter, the Court awarded damages in the amount of 500,000 naira each to be paid by the first and second defendants to any charity of the plaintiff’s choice. The court also granted a court order preventing the defendants from producing copies of their book with the defamatory words on pages 54 and 83.

The court also gave the defendant 30 days from his sentence to erase and remove such defamatory words from unsold copies of the book in the defendant’s custody.

Remember that in 2017, an exclusive report that appeared online said that Ayida’s lawyers had written a ‘demand letter’ to Makinwa asking him to stop promoting and selling the memoir titled On Becoming.

Maje’s lawsuit also mentioned that the book contained libelous words, was misleading and had subjected it to public ridicule. Ayida, in the letter, asked Makinwa, among other things, to withdraw the book from circulation, withdraw all distributed copies, and hand them over for destruction.

The letter also said that the fact that the media personality did not take up the words said in the book and offered a full page apologizing to Maje Ayida in three national newspapers would lead to the initiation of legal action.
